Where am I?
It's a good question that I think more people should ask more often.
Where am I?
Well, right now I'm at work. Back in DC. Thousands of miles away from where I was last week, Japan. (pictures soon)
It's fairly obvious. So the question is obviously simple right? Well, no. Not so much. I came back from Japan, to my home here in DC. That's what you do right? Vacation is over, back to the real world... all that. Maybe for some, but I think that's because they don't ask themselves the question.
Where am I?
I look around me and I wonder where I am. The places and faces all look familiar, the language seems recognizable, even in some rare cases comprehendible. There's routines that trigger responses, actions, and the same outcome that they have for over 30 years...
But I mentally look at my map, and realize that I don't know the answer.
Where am I?
With this realization, I look around and there are no tourist information kiosks to help me find my way. There is no guide book directing me to the next point of interest.
I know that I am free to go anywhere, to do anything.
But first there is one small detail I need to work out...
Where am I?

I missed you.
Welcome back.
I agree: it's an important question to ask. And you'd better find the answer before you have kids (if you want to have kids, that is), because once you have kids - the freedom to ask that question pretty much disappears.

Hyrcan,
You are a trip. I like your analogies. You will have to defrag and get your "identity" back.
It's very strange isn't it?
Good luck American Japanese Person Cat Hyrcan coming to land.
What I always miss about the US is Taco Bell. What did you miss?

Hi Hyrcan,
You're back. You were missed.
To answer your question, you're in cyberspace. Earth to Hyrcan...Earth to Hyrcan...

Wow, okay that was cryptic. Feeling a bit culture shocked? Welcome back!

Hi Hycran. Wow Japan! Must have been quite a trip. Welcome back. I haven't been by your blog in a while and so here I am sneaking a peek. You sound like you are a bit shell-shocked about being back in the "real" world. You need to get your hands on that Maradeurs map from the Harry Potter series to find out where you are.

Sorry, I meant Hyrcan! Geesh.

Sorry I've taken so long to respond to your kind posts.
@Vered: Thanks, it's good to be back, even if this post may imply otherwise. While I don't have the answer, if there is one, I am grateful that I have the freedom to ask it, and most importantly for me right now, the luxury to take my time in search of the answer.
@Ellen: Hmm, I'm not sure if I missed anything from the US. Maybe I wasn't away long enough, but in Japan they have pretty much everything anyway.
@Barbara: Thanks, I had hopes that I would be able to post more than I did on the trip, but it's easy to get distracted when you're visiting amazing places. Heh, when I read that Bowie was going on in my head... ground control to major tom...
@Urban Panther: I'm a mystery wrapped in an enigma. ;) I wouldn't say it's culture shock, but between the trip and other things going on things were thrown in sharp relief.
@Davina: It was quite the trip, I'll have pictures up soon... just have to pick the best ones. Digital media is a blessing and a curse. Not having a limit to the amount of pictures you can take makes it a challenge to pick out the ones to share...
Thanks again for your comments...
I may explore this in future posts once I do some more thinking...
Until then... peace.
Hyrcan,
I like your very relaxed way of blogging. Blog a month. Take a month off. That is peaceful.
Looking forward to your pictures.
